What are the fees for sending money from Canada to India? A closer look
Read on to discover the fees you might be paying for sending money from Canada to India, and how Wise could help
KOHO is a Canadian fintech that pairs a prepaid Mastercard with a money app built to help you spend and save without hidden fees. More than 2 million Canadians use it to manage everyday finances and move money between accounts or abroad.
But what about limits? If you're sending to a friend or moving money to another bank, caps can affect how fast and how much you can move. This guide covers KOHO's transfer minimums and maximums, fees, and Wise as an alternative for international transfers with transparent pricing.

KOHO sets "velocity limits" for different ways to move money. Limits refresh on rolling windows, and you can see your personal caps in the app under "Account velocity limits.1.
Limits use a rolling 24-hour or monthly clock and ATM and POS limits reset on the next calendar day.
When you move money with KOHO, you'll need to check the transfer fee and the exchange rate. We'll walk through how KOHO prices international transfers and where foreign exchange costs can crop up.
KOHO doesn't support traditional bank wires because accounts don't have SWIFT, IBAN, or BIC details. This means you can't receive or send wires.2. If you need to move money internationally with KOHO, you can use an International Money Transfer in the app instead.
For card purchases in a foreign currency, KOHO's standard plan charges a 1.5% foreign exchange fee³ on non-Canadian transactions.
KOHO customers can avoid these fees if they sign up to the Extra and Everything plans for a monthly fee.
For International Money Transfers, you'll see an upfront transfer fee before you confirm, as well as the live exchange rate without hidden markups4, so the total cost is shown before you send.
KOHO transfer limits at a glance
| Transfer Type | Minimum Limit | Maximum Limit | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| International Money Transfer5 | 10 CAD | 5,000 CAD daily and 15,000 CAD monthly. 3 transactions per day or 20 transactions per month | Available in-app only. KOHO doesn't support wire transfers. |
| e-Transfer6 | Not specified | 3,000 CAD per transfer/daily | Real-time outbound, free to send |

KOHO sits in a different category from Canada's Big Five banks.
It's a fintech with a prepaid Mastercard and a money app, so you move funds by e-Transfer, bill payment, or International Money Transfer rather than standard bank wires.
The big banks offer their own transfer services alongside traditional wires, with limits and pricing that don't always match KOHO's approach. Some push low or no transfer fees, then recover costs in the exchange rate, while KOHO shows a live rate in-app and a clear transfer fee.
The table below puts KOHO next to a few Canadian banks and Wise, so you can compare the basics.
| Provider | Min Transfer limit | Max Transfer limit | Currency conversion fees |
|---|---|---|---|
| KOHO5 | 10 CAD via International Money Transfer | 5,000 CAD per transfer and per day, 15,000 CAD every 30 days — up to 3 transactions per day and 20 transactions per month | Live exchange rate shown in-app with a clear transfer fee4. KOHO doesn't support wire transfers |
| RBC8 | 100 CAD via International Money Transfer | 50,000 CAD per day via International Money Transfer | RBC rate with a markup on the exchange rate |
| CIBC | 100 CAD9 via Global Money Transfer | 75,000 CAD9 per transaction when you pay via your bank account10 50,000 CAD+11 via a standard wire transfer | CIBC's rate includes a markup on the exchange rate |
KOHO works well for everyday finances, but some caps might be restrictive in real life.
Larger international payments: International Money Transfer tops out at 5,000 CAD per transfer and per day, with a 15,000 CAD rolling 30-day limit and count caps. Large tuition payments and property deposits are unlikely to fit within this limit.
Frequent cross-border sends: You can make up to 3 international transfers a day and up to 20 a month. Regular family support or contractor payouts can easily take up most of this limit.
Bigger one-off domestic sends. Outbound Interac e-Transfer is capped at 3,000 CAD per transfer and per 24 hours. Car deposits, the monthly rent or paying towards a special occasion or event might need multiple sends or an alternative method.
High-volume inbound e-Transfers. Receiving caps include 10,000 CAD per transfer per day, and 40,000 CAD per month, plus count limits. What looks like a high amount can easily add up and hit the ceiling if you're making lots of small payments.
Wire-only destinations. Some recipients ask for a bank wire. KOHO doesn't support wires, so you would need another account or a different provider.
Wise lets you send, receive, hold, and convert money with clear, transparent pricing. You see the fee up front so there's no hidden markup, and fees start low from 0.48%*.
How much you can send with Wise?13
With various options available, all you need to do is pick the method that fits the size of your transfer.
Currencies and coverage
Hold and convert 40+ currencies in one account, and send to 140 countries — all at the mid-market rate.
If KOHO's caps make larger tuition payments, invoice runs, or frequent family transfers awkward, Wise gives you more flexibility for both small and high-value payments.
KOHO's transfer limits work for everyday life. You can send small amounts quickly by e-Transfer and use International Money Transfer for slightly larger cross-border payments when you need to.
However, those caps can fall short for those needing to make high-value financial moves, like paying tuition fees or a down payment on a home. With a maximum limit of 5,000 CAD per transfer and per day, and 15,000 CAD per month, KOHO's International Money Transfer service may not suit larger or frequent transfers. KOHO also doesn't support bank wires, which some recipients may prefer or still require.
Wise is a practical alternative when you need higher limits alongside transparent pricing.
You get the mid-market exchange rate, fees from 0.48%, and higher limits of up to 1.5 million CAD when you pay by online bill payment or domestic wire.
