How to calculate a tip without a calculator?
Figuring out the tip
If your total bill is $200 and you want to tip 15%, work out the tip by multiplying the total bill by 0.15. You can then add this amount to your bill when it comes to pay. Simple.
Or alternatively, you can multiply the bill excluding service by 1.15 (assuming you want to leave that same 15% tip). That gives you the final sum to pay.
Removing gratuity from the bill
Sometimes you’ll find a gratuity is automatically added to your bill. Let’s say a 15% service charge has been added to your bill, and you want to figure out how much you’d have to pay without it - simply divide the total amount by 1.15.
Splitting and paying the bill
Time to split the bill? Sending money was never easier - with Wise you can send money to any recipient around the world using just their email address.

How much to tip?
In most countries, average tips range from 10% - 20% of the total bill. However, tipping is usually discretionary, and can be guided by local cultural norms and the type of place you’re visiting. Doing what the locals do - no matter which country you’re visiting - is the best bet. Your tip is your chance to thank your server. Consider leaving a higher percentage when:
You had an out of this world experience.
If the service was exceptional, make your tip reflect your experience. That applies not only to restaurants, but also to hotels, spas, tours and other sectors.
You are in a fine-dining restaurant.
Wait staff in high end restaurants have to work hard to meet customer expectations. And serving staff in any restaurant may be sharing their tips with the team in the kitchen. All the more reason to be generous.
You were dining in a large group.
Larger groups mean more complex orders and a tougher time for the team coordinating your meal. Some restaurants have an obligatory minimum tip required for large group bookings. If yours doesn’t, consider paying a bigger tip after a group dinner or a lunch.

Tip in the local currency
- In some countries adding a service charge is a common practice, in others less so. However, no matter where you are, there will be exceptions to the rule - so do review your bill before paying and tipping. Save where you can pay with Wise travel card
The tip may already be included in your bill
- Don’t get caught out in an embarrassing situation at a business dinner. As tipping etiquette varies by country, it’s important you familiarise yourself with international tipping standards, to avoid doubt and awkward moments! Manage business multi-currency banking from your phone
Tipping on a business trip
- Tipping is a great way to acknowledge great service. If the service charge is not already added to your bill, then tipping is at your discretion - but will always be appreciated. The staff working in restaurants and hotels often have tough jobs for lower end wages - think twice before canceling any gratuity tip request on their payment terminals.
