Read on for everything you need to know about sending and receiving international wire transfers with People's Bank.
Kroger is one of the largest grocery chains in the US and offers a money order service in many of its stores. In this guide, you'll learn everything you need to know about Kroger money orders, their costs, limits, and how to use them.
We’ll also introduce Wise, a money order alternative for sending money abroad with no hidden fees.
Yes, Kroger partners with Western Union to provide money orders in its stores.¹
Money orders are a safe and reliable way to pay bills or transfer funds to family and friends. If you're unfamiliar with money orders, it's a prepaid alternative to a check that you can use to pay someone or send money.
Money orders are paid upfront so they can't bounce - unlike checks. This is why many people use money orders to safely send funds when they don't want to use cash or their personal bank account.
The Kroger money order cost is fairly minimal.
The Kroger money order fee is generally 1 USD, but the exact fees depend on your location.² On top of this, you may have to pay a Western Union fee as well.
If you're sending an international money order, there will be additional costs because Western Union makes money on exchange rates.³
When you convert your money from one currency to another, these providers add a margin on top of the actual exchange rate. This means that your recipient gets less money in the foreign currency.

Like most places that offer money orders, Kroger has a limit on how much you can send in a single transaction. Kroger doesn't disclose the exact numbers on its website, but you can expect the Kroger money order limit to be 1,000 USD, which is typical.
If you want to send more than 1,000 USD, you'll need to purchase multiple money orders. For example, if you need to send 2,500 USD, you'd need to buy three money orders - two for 1,000 USD each and one for 500 USD.
You'll have to cover the full fee for each money order. If you need to send a large amount of money, the fees can quickly add up.
Keep in mind that there also may be limits on how many money orders you can buy per day.
Yes, you can send money abroad with a Kroger money order. With Western Union, it's possible to transfer money internationally to 200+ countries, including India, the Philippines, Canada, Brazil, and more.¹
That said, not all countries accept money orders, so it may be difficult for your international recipient to cash the money order. Make sure to double-check all the logistics before sending one.
Western Union also profits from currency exchange rates, so sending a Kroger money order overseas comes with hidden costs.³

Sending a Kroger money order only takes a few simple steps. Follow this process:
- Visit a Kroger store: Check your local Kroger money center hours and head over to the Kroger Money Services Desk
- Show a valid form of ID: Kroger will ask for your social security or Taxpayer Identification Number as well as a valid ID, such as a US-issued passport, state-issued ID, driver's license, or a resident alien ID¹
- Get a money order: Tell the cashier the amount you want to send.
- Pay the total: This includes the amount you're sending plus the fee. You'll need cash or a debit card to purchase the money order
