Where Is the Routing Number on a Business Check?

Out of the three numbers on a business check – account number, cheque number, and routing number – the routing number is often the most misunderstood. This string of numbers is a unique nine-digit code assigned to each bank in the US. It’s essentially the bank’s address, identifying where your money needs to go when you’re making a payment, transfer, or deposit.

The right routing number depends on the purpose of your transaction and the bank. Many banks list their routing numbers in the account information or statement sections, or you can scour the bank’s website for more information. Alternatively, you can also call the bank’s customer service line for extra help.

Wells Fargo

Although there are multiple types of business checks available at Wells Fargo, the routing number will be located in the same location on the check – on the bottom left-hand side.1

Bank of America

Like Wells Fargo checks, Bank of America has its routing number on the bottom left-hand side of the check. In this case, however, there is both an ABA Check Routing Number and an ACH Routing Number.2 ABA routing numbers are for paper or check transfers, and ACH routing numbers are used for electronic transfers.3

Chase

For Chase Bank users, the 9-digit routing number will be located in the bottom left-hand corner of the check.4

Other Ways to Make Online Payments

In a digitally-driven society, businesses aren’t confined to writing checks anymore. There are countless ways to make important financial transactions, with alternatives that can even improve your financial operations.

  • Online Payment Service Providers - Digital platforms like PayPal, Square, and Wise Business make accepting and sending payments online easy. They often come with services and features like one-click payments and integrated e-commerce solutions. While Square is best suited as a point-of-sale system and PayPal offers a purchasing experience called PayPal Checkout, Wise Business is all about simplifying the international transaction.
  • ACH Transfers - Automatic Clearing House (ACH) transfers are a digital way to transfer money between banks. They’re most popular for direct deposit payments to employees, whether it’s an ACH credit deposit or an ACH-authorized debit.
  • Wire Transfers - Wire transfers involve transferring funds electronically from one person to another through a network such as SWIFT.7 These transfers can be much faster than checks, but they often come with much higher fees as well. There are two types of wire transfers, including domestic ones within the same country and international ones between different countries.
  • Invoicing Platforms - Invoicing platforms work to facilitate the billing process between businesses and their clients. Platforms such as QuickBooks and Freshbooks manage the entire invoice lifecycle, where businesses can create, send, and track invoices. Certain platforms may be more suitable for businesses of certain sizes or those looking for specific features like tax features or customizable templates.
