What is the pricing currency?

DigitalOcean states their prices in US dollars.

All DigitalOcean invoices will be produced in USD, and payments can only be made in USD. Standard payment methods include Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, PayPal, Google Pay, and Apple Pay. You can also arrange to pay by bank transfer if you contact the sales team directly.

  • Bear in mind that if you are paying in USD from Singapore, you may find your own bank or card issuer also adds a fee.
  • If you have a card foreign transaction fee, this is likely to be around 3%.
  • If you’re paying from your bank, you may find you have to cover a transfer fee, as well as charges which are added into the exchange rate used to convert from SGD to USD.

The good news is you may be able to bring down the costs using a Wise Business account and card. Wise offers a business expense card for use in 150+ countries, which doesn’t charge a foreign transaction fee. Instead, you’ll simply pay low conversion costs which you can easily see in the Wise app.

It's important to note you might encounter a couple of other scenarios where your business in Singapore gets charged DigitalOcean fees in a foreign currency rather than SGD. By understanding these scenarios, you can take proactive steps to manage your billing effectively and avoid unnecessary foreign transaction fees.

💡Considerations for Cross-Currency Billing:
Centralised Payment Systems: If your business (eg. a Singapore subsidiary) uses a centralised payment system or corporate credit card based in another country, your DigitalOcean account might be linked to this system, resulting in billing in the currency of the payment system rather than SGD. This can lead to additional currency conversion fees.
Initial Account Setup: If your DigitalOcean account was initially set up by your business in another country before establishing a branch in Singapore, the account might still be billed in the original currency unless updated. This is another scenario where you might incur cross-currency charges.

As with DigitalOcean, the pricing structure for Vultr⁸ is fairly complex and designed to be very scalable depending on your business needs.

To give an example, regular performance CPUs run from 2.5 USD/month to 640 USD/month depending on the memory, bandwidth and storage you require. As a reminder, for this product, DigitalOcean pricing starts from 4 USD a month.

General Purpose VMs which are recommended for web and app servers, eCommerce, game servers, video and audio streaming start from 30 USD a month. DigitalOcean has General Purpose CPU Droplets from 63 USD a month. The basic level of DigitalOcean plan does have more memory compared to Vultr, though, so you’ll need to compare both options side by side to decide which works best for your specific business needs.

When you’re comparing your options, it can also pay to look for customer reviews on a site like Trustpilot. Here customer feedback and ratings are aggregated to give a live score, helping you to see what current users think of the services which are provided. At the time of writing, DigitalOcean has a 4.5 stars out of 5 Excellent rating on Trustpilot⁹, with 68% of reviewers giving the provider the full 5 stars. Vultr on the other hand has a lower number of reviews registered, and scores a 2.4 star overall rating¹⁰. Only 22% of reviewers give the full 5 star rating, and 65% give the lowest available 1 star.

These results are dynamic and do change over time, so you’ll need to take a look to see the latest before you sign up - but this can be a valuable source of insight into the providers available for you.
