To renew your NZ passport you can submit the application Online, by Post or at a participating New Zealand consulate or diplomatic mission.
Here’s a quick overview of what you need to do to renew your New Zealand passport online.¹
It’s important to note that you’ll need a RealMe login to be able to do an online passport renewal.¹
If you’d rather apply for your passport renewal using the paper form you can do it by post.²
Keep in mind that to apply by post you have to pay by credit card, debit card or money order, with your payment details being a required part of the application form.
It’s possible to renew your New Zealand passport in person by following these steps.²
It’s a good idea to contact your nearest New Zealand Passport Office in advance to see if they process in person applications and whether you’d need to make an appointment.²
It’s possible to renew your New Zealand passport at a participating diplomatic or consular missions by completing the paper form and taking it in to submit the application.²
If you’re overseas you can also mail the application to a New Zealand Passport office² or apply online.³

If you’re overseas you might need to pay an additional delivery fee to receive your new passport and application fees for paper forms processed outside of New Zealand may also be higher.³
Here’s what you’ll need to apply for a New Zealand passport renewal.
A standard New Zealand passport renewal takes up to 10 business days to process once the Passport Office has your documents, plus delivery time for the new passport. It’s possible to have the processing time expedited, but more on that later.³

For an additional fee you can order an urgent passport, which is processed in up to 3 working days.³ If you need your passport faster than that you can contact the Passport Office to see what’s possible.
