Hong Kong Bank Codes
To send a domestic bank transfer within Hong Kong, you’ll need to know your recipient’s bank code, branch code and account number. If you’re making a payment to someone based abroad - or you need to send money in a different currency - find out how you can save money with Wise.
What is a Hong Kong bank code?
Hong Kong bank codes are 3 digit numbers used as unique identifiers for each Hong Kong bank. For example, 004 is the HSBC bank code, and 024 is the Hang Seng bank code. You may also hear Hong Kong bank codes called clearing codes or sort codes.
Bank codes are important because they’re used along with the branch code and account number to guide local payments to the correct accounts quickly. If you use the wrong bank code you may find your payment is delayed or sent to the wrong account entirely. This can result in extra costs.
It’s good to know that Hong Kong bank codes are only used for payments made from one Hong Kong based account to another. If you’re sending money to an account overseas, you’ll need different information to make sure your transfer goes smoothly. This may be a SWIFT code or an IBAN (International Bank Account Number) for example.

How to find my branch code?
Each bank has a bank code, and each individual branch of that bank will also have its own branch code. The bank code and branch code, along with your recipient’s account number, are used to make sure the payment goes to the right place.
For example the HSBC bank code is 004. If your account was opened at HSBC in the China Building (29 Queen’s Road Central), your branch code will be 128.
The Hang Seng bank code is 024. If your branch is the Head Office, your branch code will be 787.
Your branch code can be found on your debit card. The first 3-digit number on your debit card tells you what you need to know.
What’s the difference between bank codes, SWIFT codes and IBAN?
You’ll need a few details to send or receive money internationally. Here’s a quick breakdown:
Hong Kong bank codes are used as unique identifiers for each Hong Kong bank, and are also used along with the branch code and account number to guide local payments.
SWIFT codes identify banks and financial institutions, but this time for international payments. They're sometimes known as BIC codes.
IBANs(international bank account numbers) identify individual bank accounts. They're issued by many banks in Europe, but banks elsewhere in the world are starting to adopt them as well.
