How Wise works in Spain: Step by step
The world feels a lot smaller now. It’s normal to have friends, clients, or work in other countries. Sending money abroad is something many of us end up doing at some point.
The problem is, banks can charge a lot for it. You don’t always see it right away; then you check the fees and the exchange rate, and it turns out to be more expensive than you thought. So you start looking for another option.
That’s when many people come across Wise. Maybe you’ve heard the name but aren’t quite sure what it actually does. In this article, we’ll explain it in a clear and simple way: what Wise is, how it works, what you can do with it in Spain, and how much it actually costs.
Wise: what is it, how it works, and is it safe?
Wise is a financial technology company with more than 15 million users around the world that helps people and businesses handle money online. Many people like it because it’s clear about its fees and often cheaper than traditional banks.
With Wise, you can open one account and hold more than 40 different currencies in it. You can keep euros, dollars, pounds, and others all in the same place. You also get local bank details in several regions, like the eurozone, the UK, and the US. It's like having a bank account in those places, but you don’t have to travel anywhere to set it up.
You can also send money to lots of countries – over 160. There’s also a debit card you can use when you travel. You pay in the local currency, and the fees are usually low, which makes a big difference over time.
Everything happens online. You open the account on your phone or laptop, you confirm your ID there, and you're free to manage your money from pretty much anywhere.
How does Wise work in Spain?
Traditional Spanish banks use the SWIFT network to send money abroad. Your transfer doesn’t go straight to the other person – it moves through several banks first. Each bank takes time and adds a fee, so the process can feel slow and expensive.
Wise works in a different way. Instead of moving money across borders, it keeps bank accounts in different countries. If you send euros to someone in the US, your euros go to Wise’s account in Europe. Then Wise sends dollars from its US account to the person receiving the money. The transfer happens locally on both sides, which helps keep fees lower and speeds things up.
Everything is handled online: You can open an account, verify your identity, and send money through the app or website. You can do it from anywhere in Spain, as long as you have internet access.

Is Wise safe to use in Spain?
Yes, it is. In Spain and the rest of the eurozone, Wise is officially regulated. It has a license from the National Bank of Belgium, which means it has to follow strict financial rules.
Your money is kept separate from Wise’s own money. This is called “safeguarding.” It simply means your funds are placed in separate accounts at well-known banks like JP Morgan Chase, Citibank, and Barclays. Wise can’t use your money to pay its bills or lend it to someone else.
On the security side, your account is protected with things like two-factor authentication and encryption. That helps keep your personal information and your money safe.
Overall, Wise is set up to protect your funds and follow the law.
