What is a Zettle by PayPal, and how does it work?

Zettle by PayPal began in 2011 in Sweden as iZettle, introducing the world’s first mini-chip card reader to small businesses.¹

The following year it expanded into the Nordics, UK, Germany and Spain.

In 2018 Zettle became part of the PayPal family and linked with the PayPal Business account. Then in 2021 changed its name to Zettle by PayPal.²

Several services are available from Zettle by PayPal, from card devices to payment solutions. Here’s a summary:

POS Systems

Two payment devices are available from Zettle³:

All-in-one terminal

This is a modern take on the portable POS terminal, and it:

  • Connects directly to 4G or wifi
  • Has the Zettle app built-in
  • Accepts major payment methods
  • Barcode scanner available (additional purchase)

Card reader

Pair this with a mobile device and accept payments on the go. The benefits include:

  • You can set it up in minutes
  • Bluetooth connection
  • Accepts major payment methods
  • Countertop dock available (additional purchase)

Payment Solutions

For businesses that don’t require POS terminals, Zettle by PayPal offers a range of payment solutions to meet the needs of any virtual or storefront business.

These include⁴:

  • Gift cards - create, sell and redeem them via the Zettle app
  • Invoices - generate them from your PayPal business account
  • QR codes - PayPal QR codes, 1.75% fee per transaction
  • Zettle payment links - 2.5% fee per transaction

Is Zettle by PayPal available in Australia?

Zettle by PayPal isn’t available in Australia, but the company plans to expand, so we could be on the list.¹

Currently, Zettle by PayPal is only available in the UK, Europe and some Latin American companies. With no current presence in Australia, Asia or the US, it’s missing a lot of major markets.

Zettle by PayPal isn’t the cheapest payment solutions provider available. By shopping around, it’s possible to find transaction fees 0.5–1% lower than Zettles.
