Qantas checked/hold luggage vs carry on?

Like most airlines, Qantas offers passengers carry on and checked baggage.

  • Carry on luggage is taken onto the plane by the passenger. It’s usually smaller items that are kept in the overhead compartment during the flight.
  • Checked baggage are bigger items like large suitcases that are stored in the cargo hold.

Taking sports equipment or musical instruments on Qantas

It’s possible to fly musical instruments with Qantas depending on the size. Hard shell instrument cases weighing less than 7 kg and smaller than 85 cm x 34 cm x 23 cm in dimension count as carry on.⁵ Instruments that are larger than this can be checked in or transported in an extra seat you’ve purchased.

Sporting equipment can usually be taken as part of your checked baggage allowance although there are a few item specific rules. Here’s some examples.⁶

  • Snow boards must be in a protective bag
  • Fishing rods should be stored in a PVC cylinder with screw ends, PVC plumbing or electrical tubing
  • Golf bags are exempt from the normal dimension restrictions

Baby and Infant baggage allowance on Qantas

With Qantas there are a few differences between the baggage allowance for children and infants, compared to adults.

Here’s what they can have as carry on.²

  • Children - Same allowance as adults
  • Infants - No allowance but food and nappies can be carried in addition to the adult’s allowance.

If you’re travelling with a stroller you can take it in the cabin provided it weighs less than 7 kg and folds within the maximum carry on dimensions². In this case the stroller counts as part of the adults carry on allowance.

Checked baggage varies depending on where you’re going.³

North & South America

1 piece up to 10 kg with maximum dimensions of 115 cm + 3 infant items Same as standard adult + 2 child items

Excluding Americas

Here’s some of the things considered child or infant items, keeping in mind they can weigh up to 32 kg each.³

  • Collapsible stroller
  • Car seat
  • Collapsible bassinet
  • Baby capsule

Keep in mind

When flying with luggage make sure you know the relevant size and weight restrictions so you can plan accordingly and avoid the stress of discovering you’re over the limit at the airport.

It's also a good idea to buy a hand-held luggage scale so you can see how much your bags weigh anytime you wish.

Alternatively, you could use the scales at a non-occupied baggage dropoff desk at the airport if they’re available.
