What are flight credits with Jetstar airlines and how/why are they gotten?

In Australia, Jetstar flight credits can be used to pay for airfares and in-flight extras, including baggage, seats, meals and entertainment.¹

There are two ways to get flight credits.

The first is to purchase the FareCredit add-on or a bundle that includes it when you book your flight. Having FareCredit means you can cancel your booking and get a credit for the value of the flight and the in-flight extras. Keep in mind that you must cancel the flight before airport check-in opens, and you can’t be refunded the fee for buying the FareCredit add-on when you booked.

The second way to get flight credits is if Jetstar cancels your flight or delays it for a period of time greater than three hours, for reasons out of their control.² If this happens, you can request a credit voucher for the value of the flight, provided you can’t travel because they’re unable to rebook you on a Jetstar flight that’s acceptable to you.

Is a flight credit the same as a voucher?

Generally speaking, there’s a slight difference between flight credits and vouchers. Usually, vouchers have to be used in a single purchase while credits can be used over multiple trips.

This can vary depending on the airline, so it’s best to check the applicable terms and conditions for the carrier you’re using.

How to find your Jetstar credit voucher

When you’re allocated a Jetstar credit voucher it will be sent to your email inbox within 24 hours of confirming the cancellation.¹ If you have any issues finding yours, it’s best to reach out to Jetstar’s customer service agents for help.

How to redeem your flight credit with Jetstar

To redeem your Jetstar flight credit voucher you can input it when paying for a flight on the Jetstar website or call the Jetstar Contact Centre and have them help you redeem it for a new flight and additional in-flight services you want.¹

How long does a flight credit last with Jetstar? Do they expire?

Jetstar flight credits do expire but the validity period varies depending on which Jetstar the original booking was made with.¹

Can you use Jetstar flight credit to travel somewhere else?

Once you’ve been issued a Jetstar flight credit you can use it for any Jetstar flight, so the destination can be changed.¹ The vouchers are also multi-use so if you want, you can use them for flights over multiple bookings.

Can you sell off or give your Jetstar flight credit to someone else?

According to the terms and conditions, FareCredit can only be used for bookings made by the person whose name it was issued in.³ If you resell a voucher, Jetstar can cancel the credit and any bookings associated with it, without providing any compensation.

What happens if there are multiple passengers flying under a single Jetstar booking?

If you have a booking with multiple passengers and you cancel it under the FareCredit option, a single voucher will be generated in the name of the booking contact and emailed to them. While this might not matter if you’re travelling as a family or couple, it could impact your initial booking plans if your travelling with friends or for business.¹

If you’re in a situation where some of the passengers need to cancel while the rest will still be travelling, don’t worry, you can contact the Jetstar Contact Centre to organise the cancellations and flight credits.

What to keep in mind about the Jetstar flight credit

Here’s a few other things to keep in mind.¹

  • If you paid all or part of your initial booking with airline points, the dollar value will be refunded as FareCredit. You won’t be able to get your points back.
  • FareCredit is only available for certain flights and is included if you purchase a Flex or Max bundle.
  • The FareCredit system doesn’t override your rights under Australian Consumer Law and Jetstar’s Conditions of Carriage.
