While Qantas points do have an expiry date, they only vanish if your account sits idle for a long period. To maintain your balance, you simply need to earn or spend at least one point every 18 months.1
Think of this as a rolling deadline. Every time you complete an eligible activity, like booking a flight, scanning your card at Woolworths, or even earning points through the Qantas Wellbeing app, the 18-month timer resets from that date. If your account remains completely inactive for 18 consecutive months, your points will expire at midnight (Sydney time) on the last day of that month.
Because your expiry date resets every time you earn or spend a point, Qantas doesn't display an expiry date on your main profile. To determine your current expiry deadline, you’ll need to identify the date of your most recent activity:
To stay on top of your balance, you can opt-in to the Frequent Flyer e-newsletter. This is an easy way to get a heads-up before your points vanish. Here's how to sign up for notifications:
Once you're opted in, Qantas will include a warning in your monthly newsletter starting 60 days before your points are due to expire.4
Staying active is easier than you might think. You simply have to earn or redeem at least one point every 18 months. Every eligible activity resets your rolling deadline. Just keep in mind that Family Transfers and points from Qantas Business Rewards do not count as "eligible activity" for the purpose of stopping expiry.3
Here are some of the easiest ways to earn points:
- Use the Qantas Wellbeing App to earn points for walking, cycling, or even sleeping.2
- Scan your Everyday Rewards card at Woolworths, Big W, or BWS.
- Shop through the Qantas Shopping portal with retailers like Apple, eBay, or David Jones.
- Earn points at BP on fuel or in-store snacks.
- Use a Qantas co-branded credit card for your everyday spending.
- Book a stay with hotel partners like Airbnb, IHG, or Marriott Bonvoy.
- Rent a car through partners like Avis and Budget.

Redeeming your points is just as effective at extending your expiry date as earning them. You can reset your 18-month window by using points for:
- Award flights or upgrades with Qantas or its partner airlines.
- The Qantas Rewards Store, where you can use points for tech, appliances, or gift cards.
- Qantas Wine purchases or subscriptions.
- Hotel stays or car rentals booked through Qantas partners.
- Qantas Insurance, including using a mix of points and cash for travel insurance.
