Jetstar flight cancellations. How to cancel flights and what happens after.

When choosing a low cost airline many Australians end up deciding to fly with Jetstar. But life can take unexpected turns. Sometimes your plans or circumstances change and as a result you need to cancel your flight.

To help you out, this guide is going to take you through the Jetstar cancellation policy. We’ll let you know how to cancel your flight, when you’re eligible for a refund, what refund options are available and which fares and extras offer greater flexibility.

Jetstar cancellation policy - Can you cancel flights with Jetstar?

In short the answer is yes, it’s possible to cancel your Jetstar flight. Whether you’re eligible for a refund for the flight depends on the fare rules for your ticket, what type of fare your original booking was for and whether you purchased FareCredit when you made your booking.¹

FareCredit

FareCredit is an additional extra you can buy when you book on to an eligible domestic or international Jetstar flight.⁴ Purchasing FareCredit gives you the flexibility to cancel your booking if needed and get a credit voucher for the value of your fare and any in-flight extras.

How to cancel flights with this Jetstar

To cancel your Jetstar flight you can contact their customer service centre or start a live chat on their website.⁵ You may also be able to do it through your online account under manage my booking.

Refund of ticket price when you cancel your flight

How you’re refunded varies depending on the type of fare you booked and whether you purchased FareCredit. Here’s a basic overview of the refund options for each fare type.

Fees for cancelling flights with Jetstar

The good news is there are no listed fees for having the value of your Jetstar fare refunded with flight credit vouchers.

If you have a Business Class Max fare and opt to have the money refunded, there are fees which vary depending on the route. Here’s the fees Jetstar charges for refunds on these particular routes.⁶

As you can see some of the fees are in a foreign currency so keep this in mind.

TIckets bought via booking/travel agencies.

On their website Jetstar doesn't mention any additional steps you need to take if your flight was booked through a travel agent. That being said, it's best to contact the airline or your agent to find out if they need to manage the cancellation and refund process on your behalf.

Cancellations of flight by the airline. What happens?

If Jetstar cancels, overbooks or delays your flight you may be eligible for a refund rather than needing to accept the next available flight.

Jetstar changes your scheduled flight time by more than 3 hours for a reason within their control
Jetstar changes your scheduled flight time by less than 3 hours for a reason within their control, which renders the flight unfit for your travel purpose and they can’t rebook you on to another flight that meets your needs
Jetstar overbooks the flight and is unable to carry you despite having a reservation

If you decide against getting a refund for the flight, you may still be eligible for compensation due to the inconvenience of being delayed and rebooked. Here’s what you’re entitled to for Australian domestic flights and international flights departing from Australia.⁷

Overnight time change due to due being overbooked and involuntarily moved to another flight at an airport over 50km from home	Accommodation, transport and meals organised by Jetstar plus a Jetstar travel voucher OR Reimbursement of reasonable transport and meal costs, up to $200 AUD reimbursement for a hotel room organise by you plus a Jetstar travel voucher

Keep in mind that if you are claiming back reimbursement for meals, transport or accommodation then Jetstar will require you to provide receipts.⁷

A quick word on flight credits with Jetstar

How flight credits work with Jetstar can vary depending on whether your flight was with Jetstar Airways, Jetstar Asia or Jetstar Japan. It’s best to check the terms and conditions to find what the expiry is, if the voucher is transferable and whether the value can be redeemed over multiple flights.⁸
