ahm is an Australian insurance provider that offers coverage for various aspects of life including ahm car insurance, health insurance, pet insurance, home insurance and of course travel insurance.¹ As a company they’re owned and backed by Medibank Private, one of the country's leading private health insurers.
To hold an ahm travel insurance policy, you must meet one of these sets of eligibility criteria.²
- Australian resident with a valid Medicare card
- Have a visa to live, work or study in Australia and will be returning to your home in Australia after the Period of Insurance
At the time of buying a policy you must also not be aware of any circumstances that could be likely to give rise to a claim.
If you’re buying an Annual Multi-Trip policy there’s a few additional criteria in place for a trip to be eligible for coverage.
- The destination is more than 250 km away from home
- There’s at least one night’s paid accommodation booked with an accommodation supplier or provider
- The length of each trip can’t exceed the limit on the Certificate of Insurance
When it comes to their international travel insurance, ahm only has two policies available.²
- International Medical Only (Single Trip)
- International Comprehensive (Single Trip or Multi Trip)
Choosing the right travel insurance plan comes down to your specific needs, including where you're travelling, how much coverage you want, your budget, and any policy exclusions that might affect you. To help you decide, let’s take a closer look at AHM’s international travel insurance options, focusing on the main benefits and coverage limits, pricing, and key exclusions.
First let’s explore the medical coverage AHM offers international travellers while they’re overseas.²
Benefit | International Medical Only | International Comprehensive |
---|---|---|
Overseas Medical | Unlimited | Unlimited |
Overseas Dental | $2000 | $2000 |
Hospital Cash Allowance | Not covered | $5000 |
Loss of Income | Not covered | $10,000 |
Aside from medical coverage, travel insurance can also provide coverage for unexpected events that impact your journey like cancellations and theft. Let’s see how ahm’s two plans compare, and whether International Medical Only covers anything else.²
Benefit | International Medical Only | International Comprehensive |
---|---|---|
Cancellation and Amendment Fees | Level of cover chosen | Not covered |
Missed Connections | $3000 | Not covered |
Luggage and Personal Effects | $8000 | Not covered |
Delayed Luggage | $1100 | Not covered |
Travel Delay | $2000 | Not covered |
Rental Car Insurance Excess | $5000 | Not covered |
Personal Liability | $2,500,000 | $2,500,000 |
When reviewing the policy limits keep in mind there may be sub-limits that apply. You can find out exactly what these are by reading the current PDS.
Travel insurance prices are variable, often changing based on your age, pre-existing conditions, destinations, trip duration and the insurance policy, add ons and excess you choose.
To give you an idea of ahm’s pricing, this is what a 35 year old would be charged for while visiting these destinations for two weeks, based on a $250 excess.³
Travel Destination | International Medical Only | International Comprehensive | International Annual Multi-Trip (30 Day Limit) |
---|---|---|---|
Thailand | $43 | $140 | $334 |
Europe | $55 | $165 | $357 |
United States | $114 | $283 | $494 |
To get a realistic idea of what insurance for your travel plans would cost, you can get a real time quote from the AHM website.
When buying any travel insurance it’s wise to check the PDS for any exclusions that might impact your plans. Like many insurers, AHM has a list of general exclusions that outlines situations where you wouldn’t be covered, with these being some of the things on the list.²
AHM offers three activity add-ons to expand the coverage offered by their insurance policies.²
- Cruise Cover
- Motorcycle/Moped riding
- Snow Skiing, Snowboarding and Snowmobiling
These conditions for when you need to buy each add-on are included in the AHM travel insurance PDS.
If you're heading off on a cruise then you need to make sure you’re insured for that. With ahm, you don’t need to buy Cruise Cover for these trips:²
For any other cruises you will need to buy ahm Cruise Cover which can be purchased with the International Comprehensive and International Medical Only plans. These are the benefits you gain by having Cruiser Cover.
Cruise Cover Benefit | Limit |
---|---|
On-board Medical and Dental | Unlimited |
Ship to Shore Medical | Unlimited |
Sea Sickness | Unlimited |
Cabin Confinement | $100 per day up to $1500 maximum |
Missed Port | $1000 |
Missed Shore Excursions | $1000 |
ahm provides rental car insurance to International Comprehensive policy holders.² It covers the rental car insurance excess or repairs cost, whichever is lower, if it’s damaged or stolen while in your control. To take advantage of this you need to be the nominated driver and have comprehensive vehicle insurance for the rental period.
There are two ways to make a claim with ahm, online or by post.⁴
To make a claim online you need to head to the online portal and follow the prompts to enter your claim details and provide copies of any supporting documents, like receipts, medical certificates and police reports.
If you’d prefer to mail your claim in, you need to complete a claim form and send that along with original copies of the supporting document to their office.
If for whatever reason you need to cancel your travel insurance claim, it’s best to reach out to ahm directly using the up to date contact details on the claim page of their website.
