What Is X Money? Features, Launch, and How It Works

Abbey Simmons

X Money is the payment and financial service ecosystem built into X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. It lets you hold money, earn interest, send payments, and spend with a card without leaving the app.

The product sits at the center of Elon Musk's plan to turn X into an "everything app," where messaging, media, and money all live in one place.

Here's everything you need to know about X Money.

We'll also introduce Wise — your international money transfer alternative. Use Wise to send stress-free transfers to over 140 countries - all at the standard mid-market exchange rate.

Key features of X Money¹

High-yield savings

Balances can earn up to 6.00% APY. Premium+ subscribers qualify directly for the top rate, while standard Premium subscribers need to receive at least $1,000 in qualifying deposits within a trailing 34-day period.

Instant payments between users

You can pay anyone on X for free, with no sending limits. Transfers happen inside the app.

Early direct deposit and bill pay

Your paycheck can land up to 2 days early through direct deposit. You can also send wires, mail physical checks, and pay bills from the same account.

The X Card

The X Card runs on the Visa network and works anywhere Visa is accepted. It comes with free ATM withdrawals worldwide and no foreign transaction fees.

Cashback on card spending

Eligible purchases made with the X Card earn 3% cashback, but you'll want to make sure that the rewards apply to your spending.

FDIC coverage up to 10M USD

Deposits are held at Cross River Bank and swept across a network of partner banks, which extends FDIC pass-through coverage up to 10 million USD.

Account security controls

Your account is protected with passkeys, custom transaction limits, and privacy controls that let you manage who can move money and how much.

24/7 customer support

X Money offers support around the clock, whether you have a payment or account question.

X Money launch date & availability

X Money is rolling out in stages, and it's not available to everyone yet.

Elon Musk first outlined his payments ambitions shortly after acquiring Twitter in 2022, and the product moved through internal testing before reaching users in 2026.

For now, access is limited by both subscription and location.

You need to be a US Premium or Premium+ subscriber to get access, and you must be 18 or older.¹²

X Money is currently available in 41 states plus Washington, DC, since that's where X Payments LLC holds money transmitter licenses. New York and Massachusetts aren't covered yet, so residents of those two states can't access X Money under current licensing.³

If you're outside the US, X Money isn't available yet, since the product is tied to US regulatory infrastructure.

Is X Money safe? Security & FDIC Coverage

Safety is a fair question to ask about any new financial product, especially one that's part of a social platform. X Money uses a setup that's common among modern fintech companies and is likely safe.

Let's take a closer look.

Banking partner and FDIC insurance

X Payments LLC is a financial technology company, not a bank. Your money is held at Cross River Bank, a Member FDIC institution, and not by X.

Because deposits sit at an insured bank, they qualify for FDIC pass-through coverage.

Standard coverage applies up to 250,000 USD, and an automatic cash-sweep program can extend pass-through protection up to 10 million USD across a network of partner banks, subject to program terms.¹

This fintech-plus-bank model is the same structure that many trusted providers use, so it's a standard and largely safe approach.

Security protocols

X Money includes the security features you'd expect from a modern payment app.

Accounts are protected with passkey authentication, customizable spending controls, and Visa fraud protection, along with encryption and privacy settings that let you control who can send you money and how much moves at once.¹

Regulatory compliance

To operate a payments service in the US, you need to clear state-by-state rules.

X Payments LLC holds money transmitter licenses in 41 states and Washington, DC. It's not available in New York and Massachusetts.³

How to sign up for X Money

Currently, X Money is invite-only.

The sign-up process is done inside the X app, but access isn't automatic even if you qualify. The rollout is phased, so not every eligible Premium user gets it on day one.

To qualify for access, you need to:

  • Be 18 or older
  • Live in one of the supported states
  • Subscribe to X Premium or Premium+

Meeting all the requirements makes you eligible, but it doesn't guarantee access right away.

Looking for a proven global banking alternative?

X Money is new, US-only, and currently lacks foreign currency holding and cross-border sending.

If you want a financial service that already works across borders and has a track record with millions of customers, Wise is a strong option for both everyday spending and international money transfers.

With Wise:

  • You can earn interest on your balance while keeping easy access to your money
  • Fees are low and shown upfront, so you always see the cost before you send
  • The multi-currency debit card lets you spend in 150+ countries at the mid-market exchange rate
  • You can send money in 40+ currencies, with many transfers arriving within seconds

If you need to move money across countries and currencies, Wise is a practical choice whether you're paying bills at home, sending funds abroad, or getting paid in another currency.
