Yes, Meijer partners with Western Union for money orders.¹
You can purchase money orders during normal store hours, but it's a good idea to check with the location in your area to confirm the Meijer money order hours.
Money orders are prepaid paper documents. They're like checks, but safer and can be paid for in cash. People use them to pay bills, make purchases or send money when they don’t want to use bank transfers or personal checks.
Money orders can't bounce, which makes them a secure and reliable payment method. But they aren't a good choice for bigger transactions or if you need to get money to another country.
Meijer doesn't share this information on their website, but third-party sources report that the Meijer money order fee is 0.70 USD per order. That's a flat fee regardless of the amount.²
If you need to purchase multiple money orders, you'll have to pay the fee with each one.
This rate is competitive. For example, USPS (United States Postal Service) charges 2.35 USD for money orders under 500 USD and 3.40 USD for money orders between 500 USD and 1,000 USD.³
If you’re sending an international money order, Western Union also profits from currency exchange.⁴
This means if you're trying to send money abroad and need to change currencies, Western Union will give you a higher exchange rate than what you see on Google and pocket the difference.

Meijer caps money orders at 500 USD each. There's also usually a daily limit of 3,000 USD worth of money orders per customer.²
This aligns with other providers, but some offer higher limits. USPS, for example, allows up to 1,000 USD per money order.³
Looking for higher limits? With Wise, you can send up to 1,000,000 USD per wire transaction to 160+ countries. |

It's possible through Western Union, but it can be difficult to cash money orders abroad.
Many financial institutions abroad don't accept US money orders, so your recipient might be stuck with a piece of paper that they can't do anything with.
If you need to send money to another country, it's a good idea to check with the recipient first. You should ask them about their bank's policies for cashing or depositing money orders.
Keep in mind that you'll also lose money on the currency exchange if you need to change USD to a local currency.
A smart option if you’re sending money overseas: meet Wise.
Register a Wise account online or in the Wise app on iOS and Android, and send money to 160+ countries, with the mid-market exchange rate and low, transparent fees.
Wise always shows you the amount you’re paying and how much your recipient will get — and you can even compare against other providers on the Wise app or desktop site.
If another service is cheaper for your particular payment, you’ll be shown — so you can’t lose.

All Meijer locations typically sell money orders, so getting one is easy. Follow these steps:
- Visit a Meijer store
- Head to the customer service or Western Union desk
- Request a money order
- Fill out your money order
- Pay with cash or debit card
- Double-check all details
- Keep your receipt for tracking
Getting a Western Union money order from Meijer should only take you a few minutes, but you need to come in person. You can't get a Meijer money order online.
You'll need pretty basic information to fill out your money order. Here's what you should have on hand before you head to the store:
- Name of the recipient
- Your name and address
- Memo (if you need to explain the purpose of the transfer)
You'll also need to sign the Meijer money order where it says "Purchaser's Signature" and keep the receipt for tracking or if you need to get a refund.
Money orders are hard to track or cancel.
To track a Meijer money order, visit the Western Union website or call 1-800-999-9660. They'll only be able to tell you if the money order has been cashed. You can't track the location of your money order as it's a piece of paper.⁵
To cancel a money order, you need to submit a Money Order Refund Request form through the Western Union website. You'll need to attach your money order receipt and pay processing fees.
Money order amount | Fee⁵ |
---|---|
Less than 5 USD | 0 |
5.01 USD - 99.99 USD | 5 USD |
100 USD and above | 15 USD |
Western Union will also deduct a non-refundable research request fee of 15.00 USD from your refund amount.⁵
The fees can vary by location, but it's important to know that not all Meijer stores cash personal checks and money orders. Call your local store for specifics. You might need to cash your check or money order elsewhere.
Yes, you can use cash or debit cards for money orders. Keep in mind that additional fees may apply to debit cards.
You can't use a credit card to buy money orders because they're prepaid, and a credit card is considered to be a cash advance.
No, a money order is different from a cashier's check.
Banks issue cashier's checks, and people typically use them for large transactions, such as buying a car or a house.
You can get a money order from many different places like post offices and convenience stores. People use them to send smaller amounts of money, typically with a limit of 1,000 USD or less.
Money orders are also generally cheaper than cashier's checks.
Getting a money order at Meijer is an affordable way to send guaranteed funds if you don't want to use cash, a bank transfer or a personal check. But they come with limits, and it's not a great option if you need to make a larger payment or send money abroad.
To get money to another country, Wise is your international payment solution. You can send a high-speed, low-fee transfer online with just a tap — all at the mid-market exchange rate and no hidden fees.
