A money order is a form of money transfer similar to a check. Unlike personal checks, money orders are prepaid so the money is guaranteed to be available when your recipient cashes it.
Cash money orders are a popular choice for making payments or sending money when you don't want to use bank transfers or cash.
With money orders, funds are available immediately. You don't need a bank account to purchase money orders, only a government-issued photo ID. This makes it a convenient and accessible option for many people.
CVS pharmacies sell money orders through a financial service called MoneyGram. Instead of having to visit a post office, you can just go to your local pharmacy to get a money order at CVS.
CVS doesn't currently disclose the CVS money order fee on their website. Third-party sources report that the CVS money order cost is $1.25 per money order.¹

Money orders are typically used for small transactions, such as sending money to friends and family or paying your bills. You normally can't send more than $1,000 in one money order.
Third-party sources report that the CVS money order limit is even lower at $500 per money order.² If you need to send more money, you'll need to purchase more than one money order. Just remember that each money order comes with its own fee, so the costs can add up.
For example, if you want to send $700, you'll need to purchase a $500 money order and a $200 money order. You'll also need to cover two $1.25 fees. Your total would be $702.5.
According to MoneyGram, you may be able to send money overseas with CVS money orders, but you need to check with the person or company you're sending money to first. You should verify their cashing and deposit policies as well as currency exchange rates.³
