Deleting your personal PayPal account

If you’re wondering how to close an existing PayPal account the good news is that it’s easy to delete your personal PayPal account. You can do so easily online in just a few steps²:

  1. Click the Settings icon
  2. Under the Account options section select Close your account
  3. Enter your bank account number if requested
  4. Click Close Account

You can also close your account via PayPal app. Here’s how:

  1. Log into the PayPal app
  2. Click on the Profile icon in the upper left corner
  3. Scroll down to find and select the Close Account button

How to delete a business PayPal account

Here’s how to delete your PayPal business account online or in the PayPal app. First, deleting your account online³:

  1. Log into your PayPal business account
  2. Go to Account Settings
  3. Click Account preferences on the left.
  4. Select Close Account

And here’s all you need to do if you’d rather close your account via PayPal app:

  1. Open the PayPal app
  2. Click on More where you see the three dots icon on the lower right hand corner
  3. Select Settings from the drop down.
  4. Click on Account info to see the Close Your Account option

Steps to take before closing your PayPal Account

  • Resolve any issues connected with the account, and pay off any money you owe
  • Copy your transaction history as this will all be lost once your account is closed
  • Withdraw any remaining balance from your PayPal account electronically or by requesting a cheque
  • If you have any unconfirmed email addresses linked to your account, remove them before you delete your PayPal account
  • Double check if there are any recurring payments linked to your account - if you want to continue these payments you’ll need to rearrange them through a different account or provider
