What is a Travel Money Card? |
---|
A travel money card is typically a prepaid card that carries one or more foreign currencies. Having a travel money card when you are heading overseas is helpful, especially if your bank charges international transaction fees. The card can be used like a regular credit and debit card by swiping or tapping at ATMs, restaurants, stores and hotels. Plus, some may allow contactless payments through apps like Google Pay or Apple Pay on your smartphone. Some travel money cards come with travel insurance coverage to protect the cardholder from loss caused by flight cancellations, delays, and lost luggage. |
ANZ had a travel money card product until October 2022, when the bank closed all ANZ travel card accounts.
However, the bank offers a range of credit cards that can be used as overseas travel money cards. These cards, like the ANZ Platinum Credit Card, the ANZ Rewards Black Credit Card, and the ANZ Frequent Flyer Platinum Credit Card, offer benefits that cater to different travel needs.1
While all ANZ credit cards can be used worldwide, let’s explore the ANZ credit and debit cards that offer travel insurance facilities since they most closely resemble a travel money card:
The ANZ Platinum Credit Card is an everyday credit card with zero annual fees in the first year. It offers complimentary insurance with a minimum credit limit of 6,000 NZD. It can be used as an ANZ travel card but does not offer reward benefits.2
The ANZ Rewards Black credit card offers a minimum credit limit of 15,000 NZD and allows the cardholder to earn ANZ rewards points on all spending. Compared to the ANZ Rewards Platinum card, this ANZ Rewards Black card has a higher annual fee, but the rewards earn rate is better.3
The ANZ Rewards Platinum Credit Card is an improved version of the ANZ Platinum Credit Card as it offers ANZ rewards points on all spends. The annual fee is higher, but the minimum credit limit is the same at 6,000 NZD.4
The ANZ Frequent Flyer Platinum Credit Card is better than the other ANZ Platinum cards because it allows cardholders to earn Qantas points on purchases. You can redeem Qantas points when purchasing overseas air tickets and hotel bookings. The minimum credit limit is the same as other Platinum credit cards at 6,000 NZD.5
Frequent Flyers may prefer this ANZ Frequent Flyer Black Credit Card because it offers the best Qantas rewards points-earning potential and a minimum credit limit of 15,000 NZD. This card has the highest annual fee among all ANZ credit cards. However, it also offers additional benefits like discounts on Qantas Club membership and complimentary Qantas Club lounge invitations.6
Every ANZ customer can apply for the ANZ Visa Debit Card and use it as a travel card when travelling overseas. This card does not have an annual fee but a daily ATM withdrawal limit of 3,000 NZD at ATMs abroad. The ANZ Visa Debit Card does not offer travel insurance, unlike some of the other cards.7
The ANZ EFTPOS card doubles up as an ANZ travel card when you travel overseas. This card does not have annual fees, but the daily withdrawal limit of 2,000 NZD is less than that of the ANZ Visa Debit Card. It does not offer any travel insurance benefits.8
ANZ Bank discontinued its travel money card product but now offers travel facilities on credit cards. Generally, all ANZ credit cards offer similar benefits: 2,3,4,5,6
Each card will have its own benefits; here are a few:

Debit cardholders don’t get travel insurance as part of their card benefits.
While you can use your ANZ travel card overseas for various purposes, the exchange rate depends on market rates. ANZ Bank adds a 1.3% conversion charge for foreign currency transactions online and overseas. This conversion charge applies to Visa debit/credit cards, including Google Pay and Apple Pay transactions.11
If you want to save money on your transfer, try providers like Wise, which uses only the mid-market exchange rate. Smart tech companies like Wise help you avoid extra conversion or exchange rate charges on payments and transfers.
In addition to the conversion charge for overseas ANZ credit and debit card usage, ATM withdrawals carry separate fees and cash advance charges.12
