What is 1Cover Travel Insurance in New Zealand?

Travel insurance is a policy that you purchase before going on a trip. Depending on the insurance company, it can cover medical events, travel delays and assist when your trip goes off track. The benefit of travel insurance is that it can provide peace of mind and save money in the case of an unfortunate event. A downside of travel insurance is that you won't get your money back if you have a good trip without any hiccups.

1Cover Travel Insurance offers policies you can buy before your trip and has options depending on the type of travel you’re doing. In addition to regular medical, travel and luggage coverage, here are some unique features of 1Cover Travel Insurance:1

  • Annual insurance coverage
  • Ski coverage
  • Group coverage
  • Coverage for COVID
  • Cruise insurance
  • Country-specific policies

New Zealand residents can purchase, renew and submit claims for 1Cover travel insurance online.

To get travel insurance, you must first qualify and meet the requirements. More on that in the next section.

1Cover Travel Insurance Eligibility

1Cover Travel Insurance covers you for unforeseen events during your travel. However, insurance policies don’t cover everyone and everything. You must meet the eligibility criteria to purchase a policy:2

  1. You must be a New Zealand resident, permanent visa holder or on a visa that allows access to publicly funded health and disability services in the country with a validity period beyond the end date of insurance.
  2. Your travel must start and end in New Zealand.
  3. The 1Cover Travel Insurance policy must be purchased before travelling; it can’t be purchased once you start your trip unless you choose the “Already Overseas” policy.
  4. The 1Cover Travel Insurance policy does not cover medical expenses incurred in New Zealand.

1Cover also has age restrictions, depending on the type of travel insurance policy you are looking for:

Insurance Cover TypesAge Limits
ComprehensiveAll ages are covered.
EssentialsTravellers up to 74 years old
Medical OnlyTravellers up to 74 years old
DomesticTravellers up to 80 years old

Types of 1Cover Travel Insurance Benefits

1Cover Travel Insurance offers multiple types of insurance coverage, including international and domestic, depending on your needs. If you qualify, you can choose a policy that works for you, your destination and the type of trip you are taking.

All 1Cover Travel insurance policies offer accidental death and permanent disability coverage up to $25,000 NZD. A general exclusion excludes coverage for COVID-19 and other pandemic-related claims.

Special packages, such as Cruise Travel and Ski Travel insurance, cater to specific activities. Family travel and group travel insurance facilities cover multiple travellers on a single policy.3

One helpful benefit is that 1Cover offers tailor-made policies depending on where you travel. For example, travel insurance for Japan covers natural disasters, whereas travel insurance for Fiji covers tropical cyclones. Cuba and Thailand travel insurance policies have clauses specific to crime.4

Making a 1Cover Travel Insurance Claim

You can make a claim for 1Cover Travel Insurance online as long as you have receipts or proof of payment for each covered expense. Let’s look at the process:

  1. Access the 1Cover Travel Insurance webpage.
  2. Click on “Start a Claim.”
  3. Log in to “Policy and Claims Manager” and launch the online claims form.
  4. Complete the form online. It should take at most ten minutes.
  5. Attach receipts and other required documents and submit.

Here are some of the supporting documents you’ll need to support a claim:

  1. Medical and hospital expenses: You will need a medical report from your healthcare service provider in the country where the event occurred. If you were hospitalised, you will need to show a discharge summary.
  2. Trip cancellation expenses: The first step is to seek a refund from the travel provider. Get a “Refund Advice Document” in case of denial or partial refund. Include this certificate with the original flight schedule, tax invoice for the cost of travel and accommodation, and proof supporting the reason for cancellation.
  3. Additional accommodation and expenses: You submit the original and amended flight itinerary and the invoice for your travel and accommodation costs.
  4. Lost luggage and high-value Items: You must submit proof of ownership of each lost, stolen, or damaged item. A police complaint letter or a report to the hotel or airline serves as proof of loss. If you have a lost phone, please provide the IMEI number.
  5. Car hire excess: You can claim car hire excess if your hired car is involved in an accident. You must submit the police report of the accident, your vehicle rental agreement, a quote or repair invoice, and a receipt/proof of payment of expenses incurred for the damaged vehicle.
  6. Other expenses: You must provide documents supporting the reason for the expenses incurred and the receipt or proof of payment.

You can log in to 1Cover Policy Manager to find out the status of your claim. 1Cover processes all insurance claims within ten business days, provided you have submitted all necessary documents. They might ask for additional documents, which you can send by email at claims@1cover.co.nz.19
