Revolut is a fintech company that offers a variety of international money services, including the Revolut account, international money transfers, investments, and loans.⁸ They expanded into Australia in 2019, and currently service over 70 million personal customers and 500,000+ businesses globally.
Revolut is generally considered a safe option for money transfers. Within Australia, their activities are authorised by the Australian Securities & Investments Commission, meaning they have to meet all relevant regulations.⁸
With Revolut you can send and receive international transfers in supported currencies.
At the moment, Revolut allows Australian customers to send money to a bank account or another Revolut user. Over 160 countries are supported with more than 70 available currencies.¹
To send money to a bank account, you need to follow these steps:
To send money to another Revolut user, this is what you need to do:²
With a Revolut account you can receive funds in any of the currencies that are supported for holding.
To receive money from a bank transfer you need to give the sender the Revolut account details for the currency being sent.³
If you want to receive funds from another Revolut user, you can give them your Revtag, email, phone number or let them scan your QR code. Alternatively, you can request funds.²
When sending money with Revolut there are some fees and limits to be aware of.
Revolut international transfer fees are applied based on which subscription plan your account is on. Australian customers have a choice of four Revolut plans.⁴
- Standard - No monthly fees
- Plus - $5.99 per month
- Premium - $11.99 per month
- Metal - $28.99 per month
The two international transfer fees that may be applied are the fair use fee, and weekend exchange fee.
On weekends there's an additional fee of 1% for Standard account users and 0.5% for Plus account users for making a weekend exchange. Premium and Metal customers don't have to pay an additional fee at weekends.⁵ Keep in mind this isn’t the Australian weekend, it’s between 5pm Friday and 6pm Sunday, Eastern Time, the timezone New York is in.
Depending on the currencies involved in the transfer, there may be limits on the amount you can send.¹ If there is one, it will be displayed in the app before you send the funds.
Each month there are fair use limits to how much currency can be converted with no additional fees.⁴
When this is exceeded, people with a Standard, Plus or Premium account will be charged a 0.5% fee.⁵
Revolut sets competitive variable rates based on data from multiple independent sources, but applies a spread — the difference between buy and sell prices — which means the rate you get may differ from the mid-market rate.⁶
This is different to Wise, which always uses the fair mid-market rate. That means no hidden mark up to worry about.
Let’s take a look at an example transfer between Wise and Revolut, examining how the fees and amounts received would differ when $1000 AUD is sent to EUR and USD from the account.
| Currency | Revolut⁷ | Wise |
|---|---|---|
| USD | 1000 AUD = 713.05 USD After fair usage, there would be a 0.5% fee which is 5 AUD If on the Standard plan, and the 1% weekend fee applies, it would cost 10 AUD If fair usage and weekend fees apply, it would cost up to 15 AUD | 1000 AUD = 710.61 USD A fee of 5.45 AUD is already included in this amount |
| EUR | 1000 AUD = 604.70 EUR After fair usage, there would be a 0.5% fee which is 5 AUD If on the Standard plan, and the 1% weekend fee applies, it would cost 10 AUD If fair usage and weekend fees apply, it would cost up to 1.5% which is 15 AUD | 1000 AUD = 603.30 EUR A fee of 4.30 AUD is already included in this amount |

When comparing these two options and their fees, there is also the subscription fees to consider. Wise accounts have no monthly subscription fees, whereas only the Revolut Standard plan, which has the lowest fair usage limit, is free. Revolut Plus, Premium and Metal all have monthly fees to consider when calculating the best value choice for you.
Revolut can be a good option for international money transfers, especially if you’re able to identify which plan best suits the frequency and value of your money transfers. However, the combination of fair usage limits, potential weekend surcharges, and monthly subscription costs can make it harder to work out the true value compared to other providers.
