Travel insurance for family - Guide to coverage, providers and more
Heading on a family holiday? Here’s all you need to know about travel insurance for family, including coverage, exclusions, and the top providers in Australia.
Staying connected in the sky with free inflight wifi is a luxury that most modern passengers crave. Accessing a local hotspot in the air really adds value to a travel experience, allowing everyone on board to binge their favourite TV shows, access social media, and get all-important work done.
For those taking a Qantas flight, this article will cover everything you need to know about Qantas inflight wifi, including domestic and international routes that have it and how to get a connection when on board. We will also touch a bit on Wise, a handy companion that helps you save on conversion rates and fees while spending abroad.

Most Qantas flights that travel to and from destinations within Australia now have wifi. Qantas currently uses three planes for domestic flights and they are all equipped with wifi1. The three wifi enabled aircraft are:
- Airbus A330-200D
- Boeing 737-800
- Airbus A220-300
If you’ve got a flight booked on one of these, it’s pretty much guaranteed you’ll get a connection. However, Qantas does note that last minute aircraft changes can happen, so it’s always a good idea to check before boarding1.
Qantas wifi works best in Australian airspace. You can connect to wifi on most domestic Qantas flights.
Qantas’ domestic flight network includes routes from Sydney to Perth and Melbourne to Darwin2. Even for these longer flights of 4 to 5 hours, you should be able to get fast and free wifi for the duration.
As part of its international expansion, Qantas is planning to retrofit its existing A330 fleet with wifi to provide connections across the mainland to Tasmania1.
Qantas offers wifi on select international flights but the connection can be ‘varied’ when travelling to destinations outside Australian airspace. Qantas is currently planning to add three new wifi-enabled aircraft — A350, A321XLR, and B787 — to its fleet as part of efforts to improve connectivity for longer flights overseas1.
Travellers can currently get wifi on routes to New Zealand, Hong Kong, and Singapore. However, they are only designated as ‘fast and free’ when flying over mainland Australia1.
Any flights on the older A380 fleet with international routes to Singapore, London, and Los Angeles won’t have access to wifi3.
This is set to change in 2026. As part of ‘Project Sunrise’, Qantas will start running direct flights on the new A350 planes from Sydney to London and New York4. These will have free, high-speed wifi for the full journey. The airline is also partnering with Viasat to bring connections for entire, select flights across Asia1.
One of the best things about Qantas’ wifi service is that it’s completely free1. There are no additional fees or charges when connecting and you can use it for as long as you like when it’s available. It’s also quite fast so you shouldn’t have a problem streaming content or downloading attachments in emails.
Before your flight, you can check if Qantas free wifi is available by downloading the Qantas App on your smartphone or tablet. All you need to do is add your booking reference and name in the ‘my trips’ section and click through to the ‘onboard experience’ where wifi will be listed if the aircraft supports it.
Once you’re onboard, you can access a speedy connection by doing the following:
You can connect to Qantas internet as soon as you sit down in your seat. You don’t have to wait for take off, but it may not work until the plane is in the air.
You don’t need the Qantas app to get in-flight wifi. It acts like any other wifi hotspot. You can get online via any smart device or laptop just by connecting to the ‘Qantas free wifi’ network. The app does come in handy for checking whether it’s available before you board, though.
The tech for Qantas inflight wifi is installed on the aircraft1. There is an antenna in the ceiling of the plane and several other wifi hotspots nearby that allow passengers to connect to the internet once the flight reaches a certain altitude. This system works in Australian airspace but a lack of satellite coverage and regulatory requirements cause issues outside the mainland.
