How to Send and Receive CNY to Weixin wallets

Sending to Weixin with Wise

How can I send Chinese yuan to a Weixin user with Wise?

Just login to your Wise personal account and set up a transfer to CNY, choose Weixin and tell us who you’re sending to by entering your recipient's name and Weixin ID or phone number, provide some information about why you’re sending the money, and finally check and confirm that all the details are correct before paying for your transfer. And that's it! Your recipient will receive an SMS notification from Weixin when the money arrives.

What currencies can I send from?

You can send money from a personal Wise account from the following 11 currencies supported by Wise: AUD, BRL, CAD, GBP, IDR, INR, JPY, MYR, NZD, SGD, and USD. Business accounts are currently not supported.Note: Wise customers registered in the European Economic Area (EEA, including the European Union countries), United Arab Emirates (UAE), Hong Kong and Korea will be unable to send to Weixin users until further notice. We apologise for the inconvenience caused.

Who can I send to?

Anyone can receive money if they’re a Chinese citizen and have a bank card linked to their Weixin account, or link a bank account to their account within 48 hours of the transfer being initiated. You can send CNY to individual recipients but not businesses.

How much can I send?

Each transaction is capped at 50,000 CNY, with an annual limit of 500,000 CNY per recipient. Each recipient is also subject to a monthly limit of 5 transactions per month. Note that the 500,000 CNY annual limit per recipient and 5 transactions per month include those received by the recipient’s Weixin account from services other than Wise.

I have provided the incorrect recipient name or recipient Weixin ID / phone number. What should I do?

Incorrect recipient name and phone number will cause the remittance transfer to fail, and the recipient will not be able to collect the money from this transaction. The money will automatically be refunded to you 48 hours after the transaction.

Is there an age restriction to send money to a Weixin user?

The transfer is available only to senders aged between 18-65 years old.

What should I choose for “remittance purpose”?

In accordance with the relevant Chinese regulations, the “remittance purpose” supported for transfers to Weixin users can only be either "Salary Payment" or "Family".

  • Declaring the money as being sent to ‘Family’ would require the recipient to sign a kinship commitment letter that is required by a Chinese bank.

  • Declaring the money as being sent as ‘Salary Payment’ would require the recipient to declare their payroll.

How much does it cost to send money to a Weixin user?

The cost of sending money to a Weixin user with Wise depends on the amount that you’re sending, the currency that you’re sending from, and the method that you use to pay for the transfer.

What do I need to receive a transfer with Weixin?

You can receive your transfer with Weixin if you meet the following requirements:

  • You are a Chinese citizen with a National ID card.

  • You have signed up for your Weixin account using a Chinese phone number.

  • You have authorised a bank card that is associated with a Chinese bank account to receive money with Weixin.

What happens when I receive a transfer with Weixin from Wise?

When you receive an international transfer for the first time on Weixin, you’ll get a text message. Click on the link to get started, and choose “Collect Transfer” in the Weixin app. From there, simply follow the instructions to authorise your phone number and choose a bank card to receive your money. The money will then be credited into the chosen bank card almost immediately.

How long will it take for me to receive the money?

After completing the account binding settings and signing the Kinship Commitment Letter (applicable for receiving a Family Support transfer from a sender for the first time), the money is expected to arrive into the selected bank card within 20 minutes. If there are exceptional circumstances, it could take 1-3 days for the funds to arrive, and relevant notification will be displayed on the remittance page of the Weixin app.

Why was my transfer cancelled?

Your transfer will be cancelled and refunded if you fail to complete your account binding settings and sign the Kinship Commitment Letter (applicable for receiving a Family Support transfer from a sender for the first time) in Weixin within 48 hours of the notification of transfer. Your transfer could also be cancelled if you've reached your receiving limit.

If your transfer was cancelled due to the above reason, please contact the sender to re-initiate the remittance.

What is a Kinship Commitment Letter? Why do I need to sign before I can receive a transfer?

In line with the requirements of the cooperative banks in Mainland China, the recipient must declare the specific kinship when receiving the "Family Support" transfer from overseas relatives. Select the kinship type on the Weixin app when prompted, and complete the electronic signature to receive the transfer.

I did not receive the notification of transfer/SMS link.

Please contact the Weixin customer service team who will be able to provide you with assistance.

I did not receive the funds. What can I do?

Please firstly check if you have completed the account binding settings on Weixin via the text message link, and if prompted, have signed the Kinship Commitment Letter. If you've done so, please contact the Weixin customer service team who will be able to  provide you with assistance.

My transfer has failed. How can I find out why?

You can find out the reason for a failed  transfer in the remittance details on the Weixin app. For further assistance, please contact the Weixin customer service team and provide the screenshots of your failed transfer and payment order with the order number starting with "R", who will be able to provide you with further assistance.

Why can I only receive 5 remittances per month?

In accordance with the relevant Chinese regulations, the limit of receiving 5 remittance transactions per month is in line with the remittance purpose of "Family Support" and "Salary".

Cancellation of transfers

Can I cancel a transfer that I've already sent?

We’re sorry, but it is not possible to cancel a transfer that has been sent. If the recipient does not complete the account binding settings, or if applicable, sign the Kinship Commitment Letter, within 48 hours, the transfer will be cancelled automatically, and the money will be refunded to you.
