Before we get into our MSIG Travel Insurance review let’s get an overview.
MSIG offers a whole range of insurance products from personal, motor and health cover, to business services for all types of company. MSIG Malaysia is part of a Japanese general insurance group - the MSIG Group - which has operations throughout Asia, Europe and North America.
In Malaysia, personal customers looking for travel insurance can choose from 3 different plan levels from the MSIG TravelRight Plus scheme, and may also decide to add extra coverage elements for a fee. This guide to MSIG Travel Insurance Malaysia walks through your options.
MSIG offers travel insurance for business or leisure travel on a single trip or annual basis. Plans may cover different areas of the world, and can be set up to cover only the person taking out the policy, or their family members. General eligibility criteria include4:
- You must be a Malaysian citizen, or Permanent Resident, or you must be legally employed in Malaysia - for example with an Employment Pass
- Family cover can include unemployed and unmarried children from one month to 17 years old
- Annual cover is available for people from 18 to 69, and can be renewed to the age of 80
Other eligibility rules may also apply depending on your personal situation and the policy you pick, so do read the MSIG TravelRight Plus Product Disclosure4 carefully.
MSIG TravelRight Plus plans are available on 3 different tiers which have their own levels of cover, and their own fees. You’ll also need to specify the area you’ll be travelling to as this can impact the cost and cover available.

To choose the right travel insurance plan for you, you’ll need to do a bit of homework. Different levels of cover are available which come with their own costs, so the right decision for you may rest on where you’re heading to as well as your appetite for risk. Naturally, the plans with the highest levels of flexibility and cover are likely to come with higher fees.
Here’s an overview of the MSIG travel insurance plans and their cover levels on some key items - we won’t get into every single cover category here because the policies are quite extensive. Read the MSIG insurance documents very carefully before you sign up to make sure you know exactly what your preferred package includes.
Travel insurance cover can generally be split into 2 different elements - travel medical cover which includes compensation if you’re sick, injured or even die when travelling, and travel cover which looks after lost baggage, cancelled plans and so on. The packages from MSIG all cover both elements of this, but the levels of cover depend on the plan tier you pick.
For medical cover, MSIG plans break down the maximum reimbursement available for different situations, and also have a maximum upper limit on claims. Cover limits may also vary depending on your age, as well as the package. Look through the MSIG cover documents before you sign up so you’re clear on the variants available.
Here’s an overview of the key options for medical cover as a starting point:
Plan 1 | Plan 2 | Plan 3 | |
---|---|---|---|
Personal accident - death or disablement | 62,500 MYR - 250,000 MYR depending on situation | 87,500 MYR - 350,000 MYR depending on situation | 125,000 MYR - 500,000 MYR depending on situation |
Accident and illness - overall limit (further rules apply based on type of care needed) | 300,000 MYR | 400,000 MYR | 500,000 MYR |
Emergency evacuation or repatriation of remains in the event of death | 1 million MYR | 1 million MYR | 1 million MYR |
Travel related insurance is also included in all MSIG plans, and again has some limits in place depending on the specific claim in hand. For example there’s a maximum overall claim limit for lost luggage, but there are also further limits based on item type. Again, it’s important to be familiar with the details before you travel.
Here we’ve picked out some key cover features based on plan type - however, there are other potential ways your MSIG travel plan could help you, so take a look at the full details online before you choose the plan that’s right for you.

Other categories of cover, which can vary based on the plan you pick can include:

- Loss of use of hotel facilities

To get MSIG travel insurance cover you’ll need to generate a quote based on where in the world you’re travelling to, the length of your trip (annual cover is also available) and who will be covered by the policy.
All policies may also be liable for Service Tax at 8% of premium and Stamp Duty which costs 10 MYR.
While each quote is generated based on individual requirements, it can help to look at the examples in the MSIG travel product disclosure sheet to give a flavour. Here’s one example used, to cover 2 people (insurer and their spouse) for a week in Australia:
In this case, the plan basic premium would be 124 MYR. However, the customer is offered a 25% rebate making the plan cost 93 MYR. On top of this you have to pay Stamp Duty at 10 MYR, making the total payable 103 MYR.
As well as the 3 travel insurance plan levels offered by MSIG, you might opt to add in an extra cover package for COVID related problems, or to cover alternative methods of travel in case your plans are disrupted. There are extra fees and different limits for these cover elements, which vary based on the plan tier you’ve picked, and you can add these options to your MSIG TravelRight plan upon purchase.

To submit a claim to MSIG5 you’ll need to complete a claim from6 and send it to MSIG along with documents which back up your claim. In all cases you must provide:
- Proof of travel - such as a booking invoice from your tour operators
- Airline tickets or similar
The additional documents needed depend on the claim type, and must be provided in the original. As an example, if you’re submitting a medical expense claim you might have to provide documents like:
- Medical certificate or report from the doctor you saw when travelling
- Invoices and receipts for medical care, accommodation and any other expenses
- Recommendation letter from the attending doctor
- Name and address of your usual doctor in Malaysia
Claims for lost luggage would need different documents, such as a detailed breakdown of what was lost, receipts or warranties, a report from the airline, or a police report if theft was suspected.
There’s a very comprehensive list of the documents needed based on claim type on the MSIG website.
