Wise Payments Japan holds several licences which we use to transfer your money safely and securely across the world. One of these licences we hold in Japan is called a Type 2 licence, and any transfer where this licence applies is called a Type 2 transfer.
What’s a Type 2 transfer?
If you’re sending 1,000,000 JPY or less, or an equivalent amount in any currency that Wise supports, and your profile address is based in Japan, we are using our Type 2 licence to service your transfer. Your transfer will be a Type 2 transfer.
What does that mean for me?
We will automatically use the correct licence to send your money abroad based on your profile address and the amount of money you’re sending. So you don’t need to worry about choosing the right licence for your transfer: we will do it for you.
Type 2 transfers are not different from any other transfer you can do with Wise. The only limitation is you can send up to 1,000,000 JPY or equivalent. If you want to transfer more, you can do so by setting up a new transfer online or in your Wise app with the desired amount. We'll automatically switch that transfer to a Type 1 transfer.

What other products does Wise use a Type 2 licence for?
Other than our Type 2 transfers, we also use our Type 2 licence to offer these products to Wise customers with a profile address in Japan:
The Wise Card, which allows you to spend immediately from your Wise balance, anywhere in the world
Your Wise balances, also known as a multi-currency account, which allow you to hold up to 1,000,000 JPY total across over 40 different currencies, and receive money seamlessly with transparent fees
Sending directly from your balance. That’s why sending directly from your balance is limited to up to 1,000,000 JPY or equivalent. You can send more using Type 1 transfers
