What are the different types of invoices?

As a business owner you’ve probably seen a number of different invoice types. Here are some of the most common.

  1. Commercial invoice - A commercial invoice is usually used as part of the import process when bringing goods into the US from overseas.

  2. Pro-forma - The pro-forma invoice shows the estimate or quotation for work which hasn’t yet been completed — it doesn’t constitute the final bill.

  3. Timesheet - You might use a timesheet if you’re invoicing for hours worked rather than products bought or projects completed.

  4. Past due invoice or memo invoice - If a client is late in paying, issue a past due or memo invoice to remind them and add in any late fees to the total due.

  5. Recurring invoice - A recurring invoice may be sent every month, quarter or year for example, and reflects an ongoing agreement for work, or an arrangement such as a rental.
