Learn more about the Wise account
Before initiating the process of shutting your account with Vanguard, there are a few important things you need to know:
You might also want to consider whether you’d prefer to transfer your portfolio to another provider, rather than sell all your investments and close the account.
This could be useful for investors who have a Stocks & Shares ISA with Vanguard, as transferring rather than withdrawing could mean that your investment returns stay within their tax-protected wrapper.
Bear in mind that transfers of Self-Invested Personal Pension (SIPP) accounts can potentially be more complicated than for other account types.
If you’ve sold investments, withdrawn all funds and cancelled all pending transactions, you’re ready to close your account.
The only way to do it is to contact the Vanguard customer services team - here’s how:¹
Once you’ve sent a message requesting account closure, it won’t happen immediately. Your account will show as in ‘closing status’ for a period of 3 months.¹
According to Vanguard, this is so the company can process any outstanding fees and dividends. It also allows you to log in and download any statements or other documents you may need for your records (for example, for tax purposes).
You can check whether the closure has been completed by logging in and going to ‘My Profile’ and then the ‘Product’ tab.
No, Vanguard doesn’t charge any fees to leave the provider and close your account. There are also no fees involved in transferring your portfolio in or out.²
This means you can leave the platform whenever you want, without having to worry about additional charges.
