NAB complimentary credit card travel insurance. How does it work?

Travel insurance can help to provide a safety net in the event that something goes wrong. Given that around a quarter of Australians travelling abroad experience an insurable event during their journey, it’s well worth considering.²

In this guide we’re going to look at the complimentary travel insurance offered by NAB to certain cardholders, including which cards it comes with, who is eligible and what the benefits are.

What is complimentary travel insurance with NAB credit cards

For certain credit cards, NAB offers the opportunity for the cardholder to be able to access complimentary international travel insurance. To access the insurance you need to have the right card and meet certain eligibility criteria.¹

NAB credit cards with complimentary travel insurance

If you have a current and valid NAB credit card you can be eligible for the complimentary international travel insurance. Here’s a complete list of the cards it currently applies to.¹

Who Administers credit card travel insurance on behalf of NAB

The insurance company NAB works with is Allianz.¹ It means that in the event of a claim you’ll be dealing with them.

What are the main benefits of complimentary credit card insurance with NAB

The main benefits of the complimentary international travel insurance are mostly related to emergency situations, in particular medical expenses.

These are the policy benefits that have no capped dollar amount for eligible claims made by people under 76 at the date of departure.¹

  • Overseas emergency assistance
  • Overseas emergency medical
  • Medical evacuation and repatriation
  • Funeral expenses
  • Cancellations (with some exceptions)
  • Additional travel & accommodation expenses due to yours or your travel companions incapacity, or specified events
  • Repatriation of dependents who would be left without supervision
  • Travel documents, transaction cards and travellers cheques

Keep in mind some of these benefits may have an excess that applies.

Types of coverage offered by NAB credit card insurance

Aside from the unlimited benefits, NAB travel insurance also gives you limited coverage for a range of situations that can negatively impact your travels. Here’s a few of the other things that are covered and the maximum benefit available, based on your age.¹

What’s not covered under this complimentary travel insurance

As with most insurance policies there are certain things that aren’t covered. Here’s some of the policy exclusions that can cause your claim to be rejected.¹

  • Travelling against medical advice
  • Expenses relating to or caused by your use of alcohol
  • Failing to act on warnings or advice shared by governments, official bodies or the mass media
  • Scuba diving without an open water diving certificate or a qualified and registered diving instructor
  • Taking part in activities such as jet skiing, white water rafting, skydiving, caving, rock climbing and parasailing
  • Quad bike or motorcycle riding unless you’re driving a 200cc motorcycle (or less) and hold a valid motorcycle licence, or are the pillion passenger on a 200cc motorcycle (or less) and the driver holds a current motorcycle licence
  • Interference in your travel plans by any government
  • Expenses relating to your failure to take reasonable care

Eligibility for NAB credit card insurance

To access NAB’s complimentary international travel insurance you need to be a cardholder of one of the accepted credit cards and meet the following eligibility criteria.¹

  1. You reside in Australia
  2. The journey begins and ends in Australia
  3. You spent $500+ on prepaid travel costs using your eligible NAB credit card before leaving Australia
  4. You’re less than 91 years old at the date of departure from Australia

Family members

Provided they also meet the set eligibility criteria, it’s possible for spouses and dependents to access the cardholders complimentary travel insurance.¹

Here’s the criteria each individual person needs to meet.

  1. Spouse/dependents reside in Australia
  2. The journey begins and ends in Australia
  3. They travel with the cardholder for at least 50% of the overseas trip
  4. At least $500 is spent on the prepaid travel costs for each person using the card holders credit card account
  5. They’re less than 91 years old at the date of departure from Australia

How to access this insurance - is it automatic for NAB credit card holders

Once you meet all of the criteria, the NAB complimentary international travel insurance becomes automatically available to you.¹

If you’re positively diagnose with COVID-19 you may still be eligible for coverage under these areas, depending on the circumstances and if any policy exclusions apply.¹

Additional things to keep in mind

Here’s a few things to keep in mind if you’re thinking about using the complimentary NAB travel insurance next time you fly overseas.

  • If you are aged 76-90 there are many policy benefits that aren’t available to you, including no cover for additional expenses, overseas emergency medical, funeral expenses and medical evacuation and repatriation.¹ It’s a good idea to read all of the additional policy exclusions to help you decide if you want to take out additional insurance.
  • If something goes wrong and you do need to make a claim it’s important to try and notify Allianz as early as possible and keep receipts for any costs you want to try to claim back.
